Epidemiological and clinical profile of artificial induction of labour with misoprostol in primiparous women in the province of South Kivu at HGR Panzi

Abstract

Introduction : Misoprostol is a synthetic analog of prostaglandin E1 commonly used as a method of artificial labor induction. This study aims to determine the socioepidemiological profile of misoprostol induction in primiparous women.
Method: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study conducted from July 01, 2021 to January 31, 2023 among primiparous women at the Maternity Hospital of Panzi,
Bukavu. Analyses were performed using SPSS 20.42 software.
Results : In this study, 144 primiparous women were enrolled, representing a 13% frequency of misoprostol induction. The mean age was 23.6±4 years. Married women
accounted for 87.5% of cases, and 91.7% of them were unmarried. Primiparous women with 3 to 4 antenatal visits accounted for 60.4%. The mean Bishop score was 3.3±1.
Premature rupture of membranes was the most common indication for induction (25.7%), followed by preeclampsia (19.4%). Post-partum haemorrhage was found in
4.9%.
Conclusion: Misoprostol induction of labor is common in our setting, and an unfavorable Bishop score associated with premature rupture of membranes is the main
indication for this induction, with a low rate of postpartum hemorrhage.
